ASMAT CARVING


A great Asmat carving from Irian Jaya of two Male ancestor figures of a style exemplified by the huge Asmat funerary 'bis' pole carvings found there. The main figure is standing on some kind of bird (probably a hornbill) and both figures have great faces and are very well carved. The piece stands 25" high and weighs approx. 5lb. The piece was collected by an Australian mine worker in 1971
