An old carved wooden crocodile that was collected in the 1930's by an Australian engineer (The later styles ,after 1950, of carving crocodiles was completely different and more realistic) The crocodile played a huge part in the life of tribespeople living along the Sepik River and they were often carved to be used in ceremonies. This great example is one of the best of the older examples I have seen as most are quite crudely carved. Apart from a few knocks and dings and the remnants of having been laquered ages ago (mainly underneath), the carving is in excellent condition. Length is just over 20".
